for some reason i was thinking about good interview questions. i don't ever anticipate having the opportunity to hire someone these questions would apply to, but i wanted to write them down so i could use a few of them to gauge any applicant's level of network/systems awareness.
- how many timeslots on a t1?
- explain the differences between t1 and pri and explain why one is preferable to the other in various situations.
- what are the different types of isdn?
- name three types of digital subscriber line and give a unique characteristic of each.
- explain 568a/b.
- what is an autonomous system?
- what is the difference between link-state and distance-vector routing protocols? give an example of each.
- what is the difference between ibgp and ebgp?
- explain cidr / vlsm.
- explain the primary features of a hypervisor.
- describe dns resolution and how it relates to domain name registration.
- describe in detail the process a windows pc uses for name resolution.
- what protocols and ports do the following services use: http, https, smtp, dns, ftp, rdp, smb, kerberos?
- explain the difference between stateful/stateless firewalls.
- explain nat and how it is different from pat.
- from the cli, how can you determine the serial number of a cisco router or switch?
- explain what vlans are, what they do and why you would want to use them.
- what is span and why would you use it?
- explain osi layers 1-4 and give examples of devices and/or services that operate at each layer.
- what is the function of a layer 3 switch? what benefit is there to doing l3 routing in a switch vs a router?
- give a brief overview of 802.11 including the various specifications and frequencies used. define ssid.
- what is capwap?
- what is radius? what is the name of the microsoft implementation? what are some examples of other implementations?
- what is a san and why would you want to use one? what are some types of sans? what is a lun?
- with regard to sans, explain zoning.
- what are some kpis that you would use when troubleshooting a storage slowdown?
- describe the various packets that would be sent/received by a client leasing an ip address from a dhcp server. what is the source and destination ip and mac address of each packet?
- briefly describe public key encryption.
- a windows 2003 vm is running low on space on the system drive. describe the steps you would take to expand the system drive.
- in relation to networking, what is vtp and what is it used for?
- what is the process for opening a tac case?
- explain what a cdn is and how it works.
- explain what a load balancer is and how it works. explain session stickiness / session affinity.
- explain the concept of aws regions and availability zones.
- what are the core storage services in aws and in what case(s) is each appropriate?
- what services does a vmkernel port provide?
- what are the prerequisites for vmotion?
- what is sms / sccm and what can they be used for?
- describe the method used to determine what group policies are applied to a given object in active directory.
- describe the differences between vertical and horizontal scaling and talk about key architectural decisions that might need to be made when designing an app to enable horizontal scaling.
- what is static nat?
- what is the maximum length of an ethernet cable according to the spec?
- what are near end crosstalk and far end crosstalk?
- which pins are used to transmit data on an ethernet cable and which are used for power?
- what is the maximum power draw for 802.3af poe and poe+?
- what is the spec bandwidth of usb 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, the various firewires, esata and thunderbolt?
- describe the difference between scsi buses such as sas and sata and non-scsi buses such as ide.
- what is the difference between pci-e and pci-x?
- when referring to cd-rom speed, what does 1x represent?
- what is the maximum upload speed of a 56k modem?
- describe arp/rarp.
- what is the cidr notation for a subnet having 512 addresses?
- what is netbios?
- tcp/ip is the most common networking protocol in use today. what are the two other networking protocols that were natively supported in windows 95?
- what functions does a bios provide?
